UPS Leaders reach out to residents

UPS has been one of our consistent partners over the last couple of years. To kick start this year’s community service, 27 UPS leaders from the Leadership Training School for Supervisors paid a visit to Bedok Home on 21 March.

The UPSers arrived eager to spread the joy and cheer amongst the residents. The UPSers were well-organised and carried out the activities such as light exercises, games and Karaoke with ease.

Each resident was paired up with at least 2 UPSers during the visit. Joo Chan, the ‘resident’ Emcee from UPS expertly hyped up the atmosphere and created a lot of laughter and involvement from the residents. The leaders from UPS got onto the swing of things quickly, their enthusiasm was infectious and the residents warmed up quickly to them.

“Our participants had a great time interacting and sharing with th residents. We look forward to engaging future community activities with the Home in the future,” commented the enthused Mazleen, UPS Human Resource Supervisor.

“Who let the dogs out -”Woof Woof Woof!”

You may have been tempted to ask the question, “Who let the dogs out?” if you had visited the Toa Payoh Home on the 14th of February. There were a bevy of young enthusiastic ladies and their even more enthusiastic dogs frolicking at the Home, but no one was complaining!

The St Margaret’s Ex-Students’ Association (SMESA) wanted to come up with a novel theme for their visit to the Home and that is how the idea of “Bring a Pet Day” was born.

This was the first of many visits that have been planned by SMESA for the Home. There was a lot of careful planning to ensure the success of this event. The teachers even conducted interviews with the dogs’ owners about the dog’s behaviour around strangers, their response to a change in environment and health, etc, before they were approved.

There were about 20 young ladies, accompanied by their mentors from the SMESA. Of course the main highlights were the 4 dogs which had come to “perform”. The residents were indeed excited to see these unusual visitors. Under the careful eyes of the girls, the residents were able to interact and pat the dogs. “Lady” was the definite star of the show as she performed several tricks to the amusement of the residents.

The girls had made the effort to prepare some lively songs and conducted simple games to engage the residents. The girls and their animal friends definitely brought much love to the residents on St Valentine’s Day!
